Help & Frequently Asked Questions

The following is a collection of frequently asked questions we hope will cover the majority of support items that may come up, but if your question isn't answered here, please feel free to contact us directly.

Submission Questions

Q: Does the CBN moderate submissions?
A: Yes, we review every site to assure it meets our standards and guidelines.

Q: What types of sites does the China Blog Network accept?
A: The site must be about China in some way, and must feature primarily non-commercial content.

Q: Does it have to be a blog?
A: We use the term "blog" loosely; as we feel the lines between blogs, media outlets and content-driven sites continues to blur. If the site features dynamic and expanding content that is journalistic, opinion-based or informative, it will be accepted.

Q: Can I add more than one site?
A: Yes, as long as all the sites meet our guidelines, you can add as many sites as you'd like.

Q: Do I need to be the owner of a site to add it to the CBN?
A: No, but you do need to be affiliated with the site somehow (an editor, writer, etc.).

CBN Widget Questions

Q: What is the CBN Widget?
A: The CBN Widget is a small panel that fits in your sites sidebar or footer and displays links to the previous and next sites in the network (like a ring). In this way, visitors can discover other blogs leading from your blog, and discover your blog leading from other sites. It also contains a link to your site's CBN page and displays your site's star rating.

Q: Where can I get the CBN Widget code?
A: The CBN Widget code is available on your profile page. Simply login and click the "View Profile" link at the top of the page. On your profile you will see a list of your sites along with a button that says "Get Widget Code". Simply copy and paste the code into your Web site wherever you'd like it to display.

Q: What width is the widget?
The widget is dynamic and will automatically scale to the width of the container it is put in (ie. your sidebar).

Q: I've added the widget, but the bottom seems cut off. How can I fix this?
A: In some instances, the widget needs to be told what height it should be. This is done by adding a simple bit of extra text to the widget code. In the widget code you will see a URL that looks like:

http://www.chinablognetwork.com/cbnwidget.php?cbnid=## (where ## is your site's CBN ID)

To specify a height, simply add "&height=###px". So if you wanted the widget to display at 100px high, your URL would look like:

http://www.chinablognetwork.com/cbnwidget.php?cbnid=##&height=100px (where ## is your site's CBN ID)

Q: I have the widget installed, but it isn't linking to my site's page, nor is it showing the number of "likes" it's received.
This sometimes occurs when the widget code is added before the site is approved and for some reason is generated without the site's CBN ID number. Go back and check your code and make sure it looks like:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.chinablognetwork.com/cbnwidget.php?cbnid=###"></script>

### should be your site's CBN ID #. If there is no number there, please just edit your site's profile page and you'll see the CBN ID # in your browser's address bar. If you have any problems, please contact us.

Q: I'm on a hosted blogging service (ie. Wordpress.com) and cannot add Javascript to my site, is there an alternative, non-Javascript widget?
A: Yes and no. If your blog host supports iFrames, then yes -- see this page. If they don't support Javascript nor Iframes, I'm afraid for the moment we don't have an option other than to link directly to your site's profile page on CBN.

Miscellaneous Questions

Q: Why is my site's screenshot showing the root site and not my blog?
A: This is due to the screenshot capture function we are using, it can only grab the root site. We are working on some ways to improve this.

Q: I found a site on CBN that is in clear violation of the Membership Guidelines or is a dead link, how can I report it?
A: For now the best/easiest way to report a site is to simply contact us.
